FTLR: Greenshields & McNeill share recipe for success

The Anstruther Medal is always exciting and throws up great storylines every year. This year was no exception. We had Paul Gowens, 2022 rookie of the year, winning the Plate partnered by his son Scott, we had Medal finalists of 2022 scrapping it out in the wooden spoon match in 2023, and McColgan, doing better year on year, but not quite enough to get his hands on the trophy.

The 2023 winners were Ally Greenshields and Calum McNeill. McNeill in his second year on Tour and Greenshields his first both won their first Tour event with the Medal, and we got the chance to sit with them and hear all about it.

Since its creation the Anstruther Medal has visited Anstruther and Milnathort Golf Courses and in 2023 it was another new venue, this time the small Royal burgh of Falkland. Nestled at the foot of the Lomond Hills, it was once home to Scottish Royalty at Falkland Palace.

The Medal is competed for over 9 holes of Fourball matchplay, it’s a breakneck format, with no space for slow starts and 2023 was without exception.

It was an exciting field in 2023 with a few debutants adding a little bit of mystery to the proceedings.

The Tour headed just North of its spiritual home this week as the Anstruther Medal was held at Milnathort Golf Club. The players were met with a course in great condition and some of the nicest weather we’ve had all year.

The Anstruther Medal is a break away from the individual stroke play events that dominate the Tour’s summer schedule so how did the field enjoy it?

The From the Locker Room team were there to soak in all the action and chat with the players and when the dust had settled, and the winners had taken time to let it all soak in we managed to sit down with EuroDov Tour player Graeme Connor to discuss his Anstruther Medal victory.

2022 Anstruther Medal: Tournament Review

The EuroDov Tour took a break from the Order of Merit as we entered August with the playing of the second Anstruther Medal.

First held in 2021, at Anstruther Golf Course and won by Greig Baxter – playing solo due to Covid-19 protocols – the Medal plays a rotation of courses and in year two the Tour arrived at Milnathort, just a short distance from the spiritual home of the Tour, Kinross.

2022 saw 16 players fill the roster and all 8 teams raring to go. As was the case in 2021, round 1 was a qualifier, with the winners progressing to the Medal draw and the losers into the Plate.

The event saw 12 matches in total, with seven of them being won on countback showing how hotly contested the day was. Our eventual winner was the countback King and we sit down with him now.

Greig Baxter, one of two solo players in the field, overcame three pairs to lift the inaugural Anstruther Medal, how does that feel? “Winning any tour event is always an emotional occasion but to be the first name on a new event trophy makes it extra special.”
