FTLR: Connor/Goldie lift Anstruther Medal

From the Locker Room
Saturday, 6 August 2022
The Tour was met with near perfect golfing conditions and a course in fantastic condition for the Anstruther Medal.
Milnathort made its debut on the Tour and the players were met with a course bursting with risk and reward and challenges lurking at every corner.
The From the Locker Room team were there to soak in all the action and chat with the players and when the dust had settled, and the winners had taken time to let it all soak in we managed to sit down with EuroDov Tour player Graeme Connor to discuss his Anstruther Medal victory.
Welcome Graeme, unfortunately Sam couldn’t join us but it’s great to be sitting down with a new face in the winner’s circle in 2022. How does it feel to win the Anstruther Medal?
“It’s always a great feeling to lift silverware, it helps reaffirm that my game is in a good place and gives me confidence going into the home stretch.”
This is your second Tour win in your career, with your first coming in the Plate section of the 2021 Anstruther Medal, it must feel good to have gone one better?
“I must admit this format seems to favour me, I never technically lost a match last year either, we were thwarted on countback.”
Well hopefully 2021 will be a distant memory now you have your hands on the big prize.
Let’s talk about the course, it’s new on the rota, what did you think?
“The course was very enjoyable, a lot of variety in holes and you had to think your way round. Course was in nice condition, albeit greens a little slower than I’m used to.”
You played Anderson/Lynch in the qualifier, you won it 1Up but you and Sam carded 3 6’s along the way, how did it feel to come through that match?
“The qualifier was tough as we gave away a whole bunch of shots, but we still always felt confident in our abilities coming down the home stretch.”
The semi-final you played Love/McCran and won the first 3 holes out the gate, before dropping 2 back at 4 and 5, how was the mood in the camp then?
“To be honest, we felt good in that one regardless of the score at the time. Both of us were striking the ball well and playing some really nice golf. Our opponents were having a bit of a hard time so we knew if we kept the ball down the middle and play the percentages, we would be fine.”
The final went the distance all the way up 9 and you knew you needed to win it to lift the Trophy? What was the feeling on the tee?
“Sam had been hitting driver well all day and I had been hitting 4-iron well so again, we played the percentage game. Worst I would have was a flick of my 54 degree wedge into the green so that allowed Sam to risk it, we felt confident one of us would par and enough to win the hole.”
How did you feel your chances were with Sam in the trees off the tee and Harwood just short of the green?
“Sam’s drive was one of about 3 bad ones he hit all day so yeah, our plan could have backfired. However, Stuart had been struggling throughout the round so we didn’t get too disheartened. It was a cracking drive by Stuart when it mattered though, so kudos to him.”
Your win at Anstruther gets you an invite to the Tournament of Champions, but what do you think it'll do for the rest of the season?
“That should be good fun, Lundin Links isn’t a course I have played so looking forward to giving it a knock round there.”
