May arrives, bringing with it "Major Month" on the EuroDov Tour.

And at the beautiful, but challenging, parkland course of Kirkcaldy Golf Club, Paul Gowens won his maiden Major championship, emerging victorious from the exclusive Invitational field.

Major Month on the EuroDov Tour kicked off at Kirkcaldy Golf Club with the exclusive Invitational tournament.

This unique event, requiring pre-qualification or past champion status, brought together a field of the Tour's finest. While the focus ultimately fell on Paul Gowens' triumphant win, the experience for all the competitors, particularly those making their debut or grappling with the challenges of a new course, offered a fascinating glimpse into the pressure and dynamics of a Major championship.

FTRL: McColgan magic creates history

t’s always a great day at Tulliallan Golf Club, the course is fun and challenging, and the golf is always of the highest calibre.

The FTLR boys were out in full watching the golf and we were treated to one of the most nail-biting finishes but having the privilege of seeing Mair’s 18th hole we knew as the final group came up the 18th that McColgan’s story line would be the one we’re talking about. EuroDov Reporter gave him an 11% chance of this moment at the start of the season and now we get the privilege to sit down and chat with the EuroDov Tour’s first ever multiple Grand slam winner.

2024 Invitational Tournament: Tournament Review

2024 Invitational Tournament: Tournament Review

The Invitational Tournament holds a very special place in the EuroDov Tour calendar. The season is underway, the players are swung off the winter rust and they are ready to do combat.

It also holds the unique position of the only Major, or event on Tour, that you need to qualify for. The top 9 players from the 2023 Montgomery Cup make up the field alongside exemptions. In 2024 the qualifying field was made up of Callum McNeill, the winner of the Montgomery Cup in 2023, Barry Cunningham, Richard Mair, Daniel Peck, David McColgan, Stuart Allan and Paul Gowens and they were joined – through exemption – by 2021 winner Andy Love and 2022 winner Kevin Brannan.

It was great to tread the famous fairways of the Invitational Tournament this last weekend. The field was stacked with 16 Majors, 17 Order of Merit wins and 11 other wins on the EuroDov Tour amongst just a 9-man field.

We had the privilege of watching some fantastic golf and following the tense finish right to the very last putt. Right up to the 36th hole it looked like it could be a new Major winner on Tour, but after a devastating 36th hole from Richard Mair, David McColgan was waiting to lift his 11th Major and complete the historic grand slam.

We caught up with a few players from the field to hear their thoughts on the tournament, the action and the result.

The first Sunday in May saw the EuroDov Tour descend on Kincardine just like 2022. The small village on the banks of the river Forth is home to Tulliallan Golf Club and the Invitational Tournament.

The event holds a special place on the EuroDov Tour rota as the only Major, and event, that requires pre-qualification. The top 8 players from the preceding years Montgomery Cup gain playing rights for the Major and in 2023 the Tour extended invitations to Andy Love and Kevin Brannan.

The course, as ever, was beautifully presented. Slow growth and some spring showers before the tournament meant the course was significantly softer than 2022, which meant a different approach was required from the players.

With the completion of the Invitational Tournament, the From the Locker Room team were scurrying around Tulliallan picking up all the lines the players didn’t want you to hear.

From course conditions to tournament qualification and everything in between we have it here for you.
It was an exciting edition of the Invitational with what seemed like a tournament of two halves but a the end of it all, Kevin Brannan took a step deeper into the history books of the EuroDov Tour by lifting his second Major and becoming only the third person to hold multiple Majors.

We caught up with the players afterwards and here’s what they had to say about the occasion.

The Tour’s annual pilgrimage up the Forth estuary is in the bag, and so is the season’s second Major. As ever, it never disappointed. We had a tight tussle at the top, players clawing bag strokes in the afternoon covering all manner of sins in the afternoon, meltdowns and magic shots but in the end a familiar face held the trophy at the 18th Green.

Yes Kevin Brannan, the winner of the EuroDov Cup earlier this year made it two Majors from two in the 2023 season and joined the ranks of David McColgan and Andy Love as multiple-Major winners and back-to-back Major winners.

We had the pleasure of sitting with Brannan after the round to get his thoughts.
