Saturday, 17 October 2020
In less than 24 hours a full field has declared to compete in the Anstruther Medal with 16 players combining to form 8 teams.
The tournament seems set to quickly become a permanent fixture on the Tour calendar and one many players look forward to each year.
The field has a real mixture of players with 7 founding members of the Tour declared alongside newer members and some exciting partnerships formed.
Let's take a look at the teams;
Green/McColgan -
The first team to declare for the 2021 Anstruther Medal was Green/McColgan.
Stephen Green and David McColgan are founding members of the EuroDov Tour with 11 combined RyDov Cup appearance and 3 EuroDov Cup appearances. The partnership has been utilised in 2 RyDov Cups with the pairing recording 1 win and 1 loss.
Reporters review: This is a partnership that has possibilities. The pair dates back to their University days and will have confidence in each others strengths and weaknesses.
Brannan/Hamilton -
Hot on the heels of Green/McColgan. Team Brannan/Hamilton declared as team two.
Once again Kevin and Scott are founding members of the EuroDov Tour and have 9 combined appearance in the RyDov Cup. The pairing harks back to the first days of the Tour when they won 2&1 in their Greensomes match in 2013.
Reporters review: It's a blast from the past but a might be seen as retro-fashionable at the end of the day. This a team to watch but for many I suspect they'll fly under the radar.
Allan/Duncan -
Team three was no surprise to anyone on the Tour. Stuart Allan and Denis Duncan were club members at Canmore GC in 2020 and are childhood friends.
The pair have a combined 9 appearances in the RyDov Cup and 1 appearance at the EuroDov Cup. The partnership combined to win a Summer Series against Love/McColgan in 2020 and they'll be hoping for a similar outcome in 2021.
Reporters review: No surprise with this pairing and a natural entry. A strong team who can dovetail well. Handicap changes may impact the teams ability to compete but time will tell.
Connor/Peck -
Next team up is Graeme Connor and Daniel Peck.
Graeme and Daniel are relative new boys on the Tour with only 5 combined appearances in Tour events. However both players are mid-range handicaps with potential to play way above that. This could be a powerful match-up if they can click from the off.
Reporters review: This wasn't a pairing being floated at EuroDov Tour HQ but it is one that has great potential. The pairing will need to quickly assess each others strengths and weakness as they don't have the history like other teams have.
Kinnear/Sutherland -
The fifth team to declare was Allan Kinnear and Stuart Sutherland.
This group combines experience in Sutherland, a founding member of the Tour, and the fresh approach Kinnear presents in only his fourth year on Tour. This is a new partnership however, both players have experience of playing alongside each other in competition play.
Reporters review: This is a partnership that combines power in Kinnear with growing confidence on the course of Sutherland. It is a team that has huge potential but communication will be key for this pairing to ensure they dovetail as needed in Fourball matchplay.
Hedges/Strachan -
Next up John Hedges and Ryan Strachan.
Hedges is a founding member of the EuroDov Tour with 5 RyDov Cup appearances and 2 EuroDov Cup appearances. Strachan is relatively new to the Tour with just 2 appearances at the RyDov Cup. Both players fall into the high handicap category but have the potential to play above and beyond that which could spell trouble for opponents.
Reporters review: I like this partnership. Hedges is a strong player who can score steady. Strachan has under-rated power that could serve him well in this format. If this team work out how to dovetail with each other, opponents may find themselves trailing quickly.
Lynch/Seath -
Kieran Lynch and Gary Seath combined to make up the 7th team for the tournament.
This is a High School partnership 8 years apart. With an alma mater in common this might help them gel as a team. Lynch has spent the longest on Tour however both players are on the inexperienced end of the spectrum.
Reporters review: It's hard to say where this group lands on the board. Both players have all the potential but with limited appearances on Tour it's hard to call where they'll fall on the day.
Love/McCran -
They made us wait but it was worth it. Andy Love and Marcus McCran were the last team to declare,
Both players are founding members of the Tour with 9 combined appearances at the RyDov Cup and 1 appearance at the EuroDov Cup. These players go back to high school and share a joined passion for golf and having fun on the golf course. Many will write them off from the beginning, but will it be at their peril.
Reporters review: This is the people's partnership. The buzz around the Tour HQ when this team declared was electric. If there were two players who we all wanted to see in the Anstruther Medal this was it. Oh what the hell...Go team Love/McCran!
