Friday, 11 September 2020

The sixth playing of the RyDov Cup was played in the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. The tournament was at risk of missing its annual appearance in the calendar for the first time.

However late in the day the decision was taken to run the tournament, in line with social distancing rules and under guidance on playing golf during the pandemic.

The tournament saw Team Duncan face of against Team Hedges Snr. as Captain Denis Duncan tried to thwart of the challenge and ensure it wasn't one-and-done for Duncan.

So let's take a look at the morning matches;

The morning was a tight affair, and nerves, lockdown rust, or great play saw the first three matches squared. McColgan took on Kinnear in a rematch of 2019 and the match was a battle for the ages. Kinnear saw himself take the lead on 8 separate occasions to be pegged back to AS by McColgan. The match finished in unfortunate circumstances as Allan hit his first poor tee shot followed by a lost ball following a shot into the right side trees and McColgan took a 4 to win the hole and halve the match on 18.

Hamilton and McCran would halve their match as would Baxter and Connor.

The first player to put a win on the board was Scott Hardie with a come-from-behind victory to win 4&3. The following three matches would see Duncan (2&1), Allan (2 Up) and Hedges Jnr. (3&2) all stretch Team Duncan's lead to 5.5 v 1.5.

The last three matches would see Team Hedges stage a mini comeback with Sutherland winning 1 Up over Robertson and McColgan Snr. winning 6&5 over Green and David Hutcheson posting a win for Team Duncan.

The morning singles finished 6.5 v 3.5 to Team Duncan, with Team Duncan only 3.5 points away from retaining the Cup or 4 to win.

The afternoon matches in 2020 represented the largest number of winning margins in RyDov history with three out of the five matches won on the 13th or earlier.

The matches got off to a flyer and were reminiscent of Team Dov's 2013 comeback 7 years earlier.
Team Hedges led off with Kinnear/McCran and Baxter/Love and both pairs won 7&6 and 4&3 respectively. The latter grouoing recordin gthe best score for the afternoon of all pairings. After the first two matches the scores sat at 7.5 v 6.5 for Team Hedges and only 3 points away from winning the Cup.

Allan/Connor in the last grouping for Team Duncan stemmed the rot with a 7&5 win putting Duncan's men back in the lead. Hardie/Robertson followed close behind with a 6&5 win and the final two points to push Team Duncan over the 10 point mark to win the Cup for a second year.

Match 3 Green/McColgan Jnr. v Lynch/Peck went the furthest with Team Duncan winning 3&2 to give Team Duncan a winning margin of 12.5 v 7.5.
