RyDov Cup 2017 - The Three-peat
EuroDov Tour
Friday, 8 September 2017

2017 saw the RyDov Cup join the annual rota of the EuroDov Tour. It also saw an expansion of the field from 12 to 16.

Rule changes formalised the captaincy rules for the competition and saw Captains retain the captaincy if they won for a maximum of three years. Losing captains were replaced by their Vice Captain. In line with these rules 2017 was David McColgan's last year as Captain, win or lose.

The Third Playing of the RyDov Cup was competed between Team Dov, Captained by David McColgan and Team McCran Captained by Marcus McCran.

For the first time in the RyDov Cup Team Dov got off to a strong start. Stephen Hedges led off and secured a strong 6&4 win. 2.5 points followed in the games behind to give a 3.5 v 0.5 lead after four matches in the morning.

Impressive wins for Stephen Green and Grieg Baxter offset big wins for Team McCran in matches 5 & 7 to leave Team Dov with a strong morning result and a 5.5 v 2.5 lead going into the afternoon.

For the first time in his RyDov Cup captaincy McColgan was taking a significant lead into the afternoon sessions. Despite the advantage Team Dov knew they needed to salvage 3 points in the afternoon to secure the hat-trick of wins.

McColgan sent out the Father and Son combination in Stephen and John Hedges to lead the charge. Their victory in 2016 instilling the confidence in the captain. McCran lead from the front, partnering Stuart Allan, he knew an early victory could turn the tide.

McColgan partnered Burntisland partner Baxter in the second match in a hope to shore the match-up after two matches. However, as always in the RyDov Cup, the story would play out differently.

In fact in search of three points in the first two matches McColgan's stacked top order came up against an equal force in Team McCran and could only manage 2 points as both matches finished All Square. And the story could have been worse if Baxter/McColgan hadn't salvaged a point on the 18th green.

Match 4 set the scene for a dramatic finish, as ever in the RyDov Cup, as Hamilton/Lynch secured the biggest win of the day with a 3&2 victory.

The last match was not a victory parade or foregone conclusion. At 7.5 v 6.5 the whole tournament fell squarely on the shoulders of Duncan/Sutherland & Hardie/McColgan Snr. It was a great match played between two evenly balanced teams. No one team took control over the 18 holes and the lead bounced back and forth and it all came down to the 18th green.

Like the first RyDov Cup, a final putt would seal it and send one team away jubilant and another disconsolate. Team Dov's Alan Duncan, in his first RyDov Cup had holed a 25 footer on the 18th green in the morning to win a point and after dart of a wedge from partner Stuart Sutherland he sunk a 16 footer to win his match and the RyDov Cup for Team Dov.

The 2017 RyDov Cup was the end of David McColgan's captaincy and he became the first Captain to lift 3 RyDov Cup's. Speaking to the EuroDov tour he said;

"Today's match hasn't been good for the nerves. It's great to lift the Cup for the third year and sign off my time as a Captain in this prestigious tournament. It's great to see the success of the match and the move to an annual competition."
