Projected 2026 Order of Merit Finish: Top 2

The Year That Changed Everything -

For half a decade, the Order of Merit had a fixed center of gravity: McColgan. Players measured themselves against him. They admired him. They feared him. They chased him. They failed to catch him.

Then came 2025.

And suddenly, the Tour learned a new name for inevitability: Paul Gowens — Champion Golfer of the Year. His season was not a fluke. It was not luck. It was not opportunistic. It was domination.

Two Majors, two Order of Merit victories, four weeks as the best golfer on the property, and most importantly — He didn't inherit the throne. He took it.

The Record — Ascension Through Years

2022
Kinghorn — 2
MCM — 1 (Win)
King’s — 1 (Win)
Lochgelly — 4
Tour Champs — 4
Average finishing position: 2 | OoM: 3

This was the first signal.
The whisper before the roar.

2024
Kinghorn — 9
MCM — 5
Dodhead — 8
King’s — 9
Lochgelly — 1 (Win)
Tour Champs — 11
Average finishing position: 7 | OoM: 8

Not dominant.
But secretly dangerous.

2025
St Andrews — 2
Kinghorn — 6
MCM — 1 (Win)
King’s — 8
Lochgelly — 1 (Win)
Tour Champs — 2
Average finishing position: 3 | OoM: 1

This was the explosion. Two wins. Second at the Tour Champs. The Quaich hoisted overhead.

And instantly — the Tour had a new king.

The Strengths — The Gowens Arsenal

1. Ice-Cold Putting Under Pressure

When others tremble…his hands steady. On 8–12 footers with stakes attached — he is deadly.

2. Mental Flatline

Gowens doesn’t spike emotionally. He is calm to the point of unnerving. No panic. No tilt. No outward frustration.

He is a poker player in a sport of emotional outbursts.

3. Closing Instinct

When he gets near the top…he doesn’t fade. He applies pressure.

The Weakness — The Backlash of Success

There is one problem entering 2026: his handicap has dropped 7 strokes.

That is brutal. The Tour now demands more of him because he proved he could give it.

This means: fewer strokes, tighter margins, less forgiveness, smaller net scoring advantage.

Suddenly, the same golf that won him events might only land him 4th or 5th. This is the paradox of improvement.

The Rivalry — The McColgan Dynamic

Let’s not pretend. This is real. The two men at opposite poles:

McColgan — The Empire

long-time champion
defining force
wounded pride
vengeance season incoming

Gowens — The New Order

fresh champion
cool, composed
thriving under pressure
carrying confidence & legitimacy

2026 may be the year of Gowens vs McColgan II: Legacy on the Line.

The Best Chance for Victory in 2026.

This one is clear:

MCM @ Pitfirrane — Dunfermline GC

He has won there. He understands the angles. He reads the greens. He thrives in tree-lined tactical courses.

It rewards methodical golf — his specialty.

The Intangible — The Aura Has Shifted

When Gowens walks now…when he heads to the first tee…when he checks his yardage book…
he carries the confidence of a proven champion.

Other golfers feel it.

You see it:

the slight tightness in opponents
the forced small talk
the competitive awareness
of standing beside the Champ

Golf is psychological warfare and Gowens now carries a visible crown.

The 2026 Psychological Test — The Weight of Expectation

Winning the Quaich is one challenge. Defending it is another. Now: he is no longer the hunter, he is the hunted, he sets the standard, he gets the attention, he carries the target, some golfers are built for that. Others crumble.

2026 is where we discover which type Gowens is.

Final Word — Can the New King Reign?

There is no question about his talent. No question about his legitimacy. No question about his ceiling.

The only question is: Can he carry the crown for two seasons?

Will he: fend off McColgan’s wrath? deflect Peck’s consistency? contain Allan’s power? absorb Mair’s charge? survive Kinghorn’s chaos?

If he does — if he wins again or contends again or reaches Craigielaw in pole position…Then we won’t talk about 2025 as “the year Gowens won.”

We will talk about “the beginning of the Gowens Era.”
