Mixed with the excitement of the St Andrews Open and the first event of the 2025 Order of Merit we also had the final qualifying round for the EuroDov Tour team for the 2025 Carnegie Cup.
Captain Andy Love already had Paul Gowens, David McColgan, Stuart Allan, Stuart Sutherland and Alan Duncan on the bus and post St Andrews Open Scott Gowens and Stevie Orr claimed their spots on the team.
With 8 players confirmed all eyes were on Andy Love to see who would get the 4 Captain’s picks and we can bring you the breaking news now.
Good evening, Mr. Love, thank you for joining us, what are your thoughts on the team as it stands?
“Hi guys thanks for having me. Yeah, I am pretty happy with it. Gowens, McColgan and Allan are all tried and tested players and join the team thanks to great performances in the 2025 Matchplay.
Sutherland was maybe a surprise in the Montgomery Cup but it should be noted he finished qualifying second overall so he’s definitely here on merit.
It’s great to see Duncan and Orr back and they’ve battled hard through qualifying, and I hope Gowens Jr. looks at his qualification in 5th place as a sign he deserves to be in this line-up.”
So, with the 8 men in the team confirmed, what was Love thinking about his Captain’s picks, will he honour those players who were on the bubble come the end of play, or would he go searching for players that suit his plans more?
Well, no need to wait any longer, Mr Love, take us through your picks.
“Well gents, the first pick is 2-time Major winner and 2-time Carnegie Cup winning Captain Kevin Brannan.
Brannan’s a rock at the heart of the Tour, he’s been there since it was founded in 2013, and he knows what the Tour is about. A EuroDov Tour team without feels just wrong.
He finished 9th in qualifying and he missed four qualifying events. If he had been fit to play the second half of last year, he’d most likely have qualified on his own merit.”
Who is your second pick?
“My second pick is Denis Duncan. Den, finished 300 points out of the qualifying spot and we’ll be playing at Canmore where he was a member for many years.
He’s T5th in overall points in the Carnegie Cup winning 67% of his points, couple that with his offseason form I it feels like a no brainer to have him in the squad.”
Who is pick number 3?
“We’re now getting into a tough area, there are plenty players who deserve to be in the mix here but I am going to call on Allan Kinnear.
Kinnear thrives in this format, him and I formed a great partnership in 2023 and delivered the winning point for the EuroDov Tour.
Many commentators will point to Kinnear’s zero points in qualifying but he’s like a soldier kept on ice, and when he comes out for battle, he’s always ready.”
And your final pick is?
“I have been looking at the course, the record books and the team we already have, and the only logical choice here is Greig Baxter.
He played his off-Tour golf at Canmore for many years, and with 5.5 points in 2 appearances he’s tied first in total points with McColgan.
His versatility allows us to use him anywhere in the order and alongside any foursomes partner and we know he’ll put a performance in.”
Well, there we have it folks Andy Love’s EuroDov Tour team to defend the Carnegie Cup in 2025.
We’ll bring you the build-up and interviews and all the match news and analysis come the 25th May.
