FTLR: Brannan proud as he leads Tour to victory

From the Locker Room

Sunday, 28 May 2023

The EuroDov Tour continues to innovate in it’s offering to its members and the Carnegie Cup seems to be a resounding success by all involved.

The From the Locker Room Team were granted unfettered access to the team throughout the build up and the event and a huge thanks goes to the Tour and the Captain.

In the end we witnessed a battle for the ages, with tussles throughout the order and the result far from fore gone until the latter stage.

It was absolutely our pleasure after all was said and done to sit down with your EuroDov Tour, and winning Captain, Kevin Brannan.

Brannan’s double Major winning season has gone from strength to strength adding the EuroDov Cup and Invitational Majors to his Tour Champs win in 2022. He was given control of the EuroDov Tour team by virtue of winning the RyDov Cup as Captain in 2022, and he didn’t disappoint.

Kevin, you sit here victorious after leading the EuroDov Tour to victory in the first ever Carnegie Cup - how does that feel?

“It felt amazing to lift that trophy on Sunday afternoon and it still feels sweet today. Leading the group of guys into the first competition against another Tour was an honour and delight.”

There was a lot to take in on the day but how did you enjoy the event overall?

“It was a great experience all helped by the amazing Scottish sunshine.

Could not have asked for a better organised and run event, all credit has to go to the organiser.

BGHC was in immaculate condition and could not be faulted.”

Let’s look at the morning singles, you sent the top 2 ranked players out first in the singles, were you worried when they only returned halves?

“Not at all. I knew that there was strength throughout the whole line-up and that the other guys would bring home the needed points.”

The halves were compounded by you and Stuart Allan losing your matches, was it time to hit the panic button?

“These results were more disappointing.

Stuart fell behind early and was always going to be a tough ask against an opponent who never had a wobble.

My match was tight throughout and was a kick to lose in the manner that I did. Fortunately, it's not the result of the captain that decides the competition.”

The EuroDov Tour’s middle order would take 5.5 points in the next 6 matches, that must have made lunch taste better?

“t certainly gave me a lot of confidence going into the afternoon.

It gave me some thoughts as to the afternoon line ups but I stuck to my guns.”

At 6.5-5.5 how were the nerves?

“It was a little closer than I would have wanted, and I'm sure the rest of the team would have agreed.
But I had absolute confidence in the afternoon pairings.”

The Afternoon foursomes were tight for about 2.5 hours, how closely were you following the ups and downs?

“I was keeping an eye throughout and each game, other than my own, seemed to swing one way and another.

It did make the palms sweat a little.”

Lynch/McColgan put the first afternoon points on the board, did things start to look up at that point?

“Once those points were secured it began to look brighter. The gap to that all important 12.5 for the EuroDov Tour seemed to get a lot smaller, and much further away for SanWedge.”

They were followed by a rampant display by Baxter/Robertson and soon after Kinnear/Love and it was all over…you were still out on course how does it feel knowing it was in the bag?

“I didn't actually realise until I returned to the clubhouse after my match had ended in defeat.
At that point I could have dropped to my knees and let all the emotion out.”

Talk me through your thoughts as Den rolled in an eagle on 18 to finish off the whole event?

“It was a great way to finish a great tournament. Credit has to go to Stuart Allan for giving Den the opportunity with his booming drive down 18 to set it up. At that point we all knew it was time to celebrate.”

There are rumours that the Tour might come knocking with the 2024 Captaincy…what are your initial thoughts?

“I'd be delighted to have the opportunity to defend the trophy next year. It was a privilege to lead in the inaugural event and win, so to defend next year would be an honour.”

You’re still undefeated in Team Matchplay with 8 RyDovs and a Carnegie Cup to add to it…what’s the secret?

“Having a great team. As simple as that.”

Well, there we have it folks, Kevin Brannan the inaugural EuroDov Tour team Captain and the inaugural winning captain at the Carnegie Cup.

With murmurings of the EuroDov Tour about to announce their 2024 Captain imminently we’ll keep you up dated on any news or insight we hear.
