It’s March, and the opening shot of the 2024 season is just around the corner.
Kevin Brannan will have the honour in 2024 as the defending champion of the EuroDov Cup, and the 2-time Major winner will be teeing it up on the course where he sealed his maiden Major back in March 2023.
A total of 15 players have appeared in the EuroDov Cup with David McColgan the only player to feature in all 5. Let’s take a look at the 2024 field, where 8 players will vie for the honour of winning the season’s opening event, and Major.
Name: David McColgan
Appearances: 5
Best finish: Winner (2018, 2021& 2022)
Notes: McColgan returns for his sixth EuroDov Cup and will have ambitions of winning his fourth EuroDov Cup, 11th Major, and 20th event.
He'll be teeing it up for his fifth round at Quinta da Marinah on the 21st, an advantage for sure, and his second time at Penha Longa.
It is worth noting however that he has never won a EuroDov Cup in Portugal, maybe it’ll be third time lucky in 2024.
Name: Denis Duncan
Appearances: 4
Best finish: Runner-up (2018)
Notes: Den led the EuroDov Cup after 18 holes at the Open de La Manga, before eventually losing out to McColgan.
He’s always been challenging in his appearances with a third place (2021) and fifth place (2023) finish pointing to the fact he enjoys the format.
Den is a steady player, and he’ll relish the opportunity to come back to Quinta da Marinha and Penha Longa and push for honours in 2024.
Name: Stephen Green
Appearances: 4
Best finish: Third (2022)
Notes: Green debuted in 2018 and has featured in every event except the 2019 iteration.
His is a story of steady progress with a 5th and 6th place finish in his first two appearances and a 3rd and 4th in his previous two.
He played well in Cascais in 2023, only finishing 8 shots off the lead, and he’ll back himself to have a run at it in 2024.
Name: Stuart Allan
Appearances: 3
Best finish: Runner-up (2021)
Notes: Allan nearly had the dream start to his EuroDov Cup days but ran out of steam down the last stretch to miss out on the win by 3 shots.
He's struggles since, carding a 5th and 7th place in 2022, and 2023, but he’s a player that can really excel on these continental courses and as such a lot of attention will be on him in 2024.
Name: Kevin Brannan
Appearances: 2
Best finish: Winner (2023)
Notes: Brannan is the defending champion as we head back to Cascais. He sealed his first Major, long awaited in many people’s eyes, at Quinta da Marinha where we open in 2024.
He's had a stellar EuroDov Cup career with a runner-up (2022) by 1 shot at The Mere and the win in Cascais.
He’ll be eager to claim a third major and kick his season off in style once more.
Name: Andy Love
Appearances: 2
Best finish: Fifth (2021)
Notes: Love is a multiple major winner (Montgomery Cup and Invitational) but hasn’t set the continent a light in the EuroDov Cup.
He's finished 6th and 5th in 2 appearances, but his return in 2024 will see different golfer, ready to take on the challenge ahead of him, and he could just find himself at the top come the 54th hole.
Name: Graeme Connor
Appearances: 1
Best finish: Runner-up (2023)
Notes: Connor kept up his impressive, if not infuriating run of 2nd place finishes in Majors in 2023 but losing out by a single stroke to Kevin Brannan.
He has significant international golf experience under his belt, and arguably plays his best golf in the warmer weather.
He’s played Quinta da Marinha and Penha Longa and will have the golfing wisdom to capitalise on this in 2024.
Name: Paul Gowens
Appearances: 1
Best finish: Fourth (2022)
Notes: Still building back after a significant health scare in 2023 Gowens has had significant warm weather golf under his belt in the off season, and this can only help.
His fourth-place finish in 2022 disguises the fact he was in the hunt right up till the 16th hole. He enjoys the 54-hole format and he’ll give it his best for sure.
That’s a rundown of the field for the 2024 Open de Cascais and we’ll be back shortly with predictions for the event. Until then happy golfing.
